Graphic design is something I have been aware of since I was just a young lassie; I used to make flyers, posters, signs, etc. for my parents’ businesses. Always being drawn to ads, billboards and signage for other businesses (no matter how big or small), I would think to myself, “Man, I can totally make that better! If only they do this, or remove that, their design could be so much more successful!” I always knew I had an appreciation and passion for art, specifically graphic design.
Fearing an unstable economy, I started college as a biology pre-med major, after a few courses I realized that biology was not for me. Since I had been around business my whole life, I decided to switch my major to business with a concentration in accounting; it felt a little closer to home. After a few courses, the same thing happened, I could not see myself spending the rest of my life in accounting and knew I would not have the drive to keep myself going in something I was not passionate about. I then decided to switch my concentration to marketing where I could put my creative mind to work. It just felt right. As I was looking into marketing internships I realized that a significant amount of internships required me to have knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite. It became obvious that I should minor in graphic design. As I began the courses I knew that I had made the right decision. I was no longer attending school for the sake of obtaining a degree or for the sole purpose of job security. I finally felt like I was working towards what I wanted to do with my life and doing something meaningful.
